May 25th and 26th were holidays in Argentina, so markets were closed. That didn't prevent me from looking at what was happening in the US markets after NVIDIA's earnings report1 on May 24th exceeded analysts' expectations, skyrocketing its shares 24% in just one day. While witnessing that, I had this inner voice shouting at me: Man, how come you don’t own any Nvidia shares? Damn you, man!
So, I might have lost an opportunity to make some money, but I can still use it as an excuse to learn more about NVIDIA. That's precisely what I did. I intended to share my learnings in this post, but I underestimated the effort required to research the company, so I'll send those next week. I do have some stuff to share with you this week, though!
It's all about AI
I bet you've already tried Chat GPT, at least to know what all the hype is about. In that case, you probably didn't need someone teaching you how to use it; after all, it's just like having a written conversation like any other. It turns out that you might need to learn some stuff to take full advantage of Chat GPT and other forms of Generative AI. Haven't you heard of Prompt Engineering? Please don't freak out; it sounds more complicated than it is. Don't you believe me? This online guide has everything you need to know to master the basics of prompt engineering, and it doesn't require any previous technical knowledge. Enjoy!
Most commercial airplanes operate with only two pilots: the captain and the first officer. But that was not always the case. In the past, some planes required up to five crew members in the cockpit: apart from the pilots, there were the flight engineer, the navigator, and the radio operator. The development of new technology made the two-crew-member-cockpit possible, and even single-pilot operations are being considered. Then this massive surge in AI posed a frightening question: Will Ai Steal Pilot Jobs?!
I'm curious: Will you fly in an airplane without humans in the cockpit? Contact me to let me know what you think!
Open door!
Last Friday, I went out for dinner with some friends, and since I am supposed to know about planes, one of them asked me how it was possible that a passenger could open an aircraft's door while still in flight. For those who have not heard, that happened to the Asiana Airlines flight OZ-8124 on May 26th. Trying to prove my worth, I came up with an answer that appears to have been correct, as Blanco Lirio explains in this video. Yay!
Asynchronous work
The day I gave up my calendar, I might indeed be dead. A bit extreme, I agree, but seriously, having my time managed by someone else is not something I would accept without a fight. That's why I always choose flexibility over any other benefit at work.
You know what? Asynchronous work is flexibility on steroids! It cannot be implemented in any job, but it can be done in many situations and is especially important in companies with global teams. However, to be achievable, there are some essential things to consider, including getting rid of meetings. Boy, I love that idea!
Could economic growth help to decarbonize the planet?
Some people denounce climate change as an invention. Probably the same people who state that the Earth is flat. If you belong to that group, I kindly ask you to stop reading now; you're not welcome here.
For the ones who continued reading, I recommend an article by J.K. Lund, in which he argues that “economic growth and progress may be the solution, not the cause, of many environmental ills.”
Learn to drop your eggs
Some weeks ago, I was storing eggs in the fridge, carrying several simultaneously in my hands. When one of the eggs slipped out, I tried to catch it, ending up with a six-eggs omelet on the floor. It took me almost 20 minutes to clean it up because I couldn't stop laughing during the first 15. While I could not avoid breaking several eggs 50cm from the floor, these guys managed to drop an egg from space and land it without a scratch! Hilarious!
